1997 Ron Holland 72 foot Sloop
Recently refitted and overhauled, this beautiful sloop was created by Ron Holland as his own personal yacht. He had her built by Sensation Yachts in New Zealand in conjunction with McMullen & Wing. Ron Holland drew a good looking profile, instantly recognizable as his work. Forward is a clear flush deck upon which the tender is stowed in removable chocks. Aft a bathing platform and steps which winch up to marry into the transom and aft deck. Amidships a nice cockpit, sheltered by the pilothouse, which the helmsman can see over when standing at the wheel.
The rig is particularly interesting. The mast is noticeably tall and the fully battened mainsail is set on luff cars. The forestay meets the mast at about nine tenths of its height and the working headsail fills the foretriangle, sheeting down to an athwartships track just ahead of the mast. A single sheet is led back to the cockpit via a concealed tube, appearing at the starboard coaming. The headsail is completely self-tacking, so that when the helmsman wants to tack, he just tacks. This rig is exceptionally efficient and so trouble-free that it takes a lot of enthusiasm to set a genoa, which for most sailing is virtually redundant.
This is a genuine ocean cruiser. She’s cruised the Pacific and the Caribbean. At the same time, she’s a day sailer when you want her to be. She has a really surprising turn of speed, and in autumn 2002 won two out of three races at an autumn regatta off Mallorca. A fast boat means shorter passage times. When you reach your destination and drop anchor, the anchor which was previously snugged up close to her stem, is pushed forward on its stainless steel stowage bracket/roller and lowered away - the projecting bracket keeping the chain well clear of paintwork. Bring the anchor up and it automatically locates in the bracket, which retreats into the stem. A very practical arrangement and one which keeps mud away from the foredeck. This is just one of the practical features of the well thought out design. Another is the big locker on her starboard sidedeck amidships. In a matching position to port is the second access point to the yacht’s engine room.
Perhaps her crowning feature is one which appeals to all aboard, the wonderful dining situation in her pilothouse. Two high seats may be placed at its inboard side when required. Everyone dining gets a view of the anchorage. Experience it once and you wonder how anyone manages without such an arrangement!
With all of the recent refit works having been completed, now is the perfect time to purchase a beautifully designed and well built yacht which has been refitted impeccably. A viewing is a must to see the quality and full value of this yacht.
Asking price has recently been lowered to USD $580,000 and the owner will look at all offers.
